NEWMAN – Ignition (2020)
Released via AOR Heaven Records, the first NEWMAN album in 3 years “Ignition” is finally here, 12 songs in a natural continuation from 2017’s “Aerial” release. Since then Steve Newman has been busy writing songs with the likes of Toby Hitchcock, joined the band Burn who released the excellent ‘Ice Age’ at the end of 2017, plus playing a few live shows supporting Terry Brock among others.
The opening duo of ‘End Of The Road’ and ‘Chasing Midnight’ are prime examples of what to expect on a Newman album – riff driven melodic rock, with a sprinkling of keys.
But just when you think it is business as usual, the title track appears, a neat diversion with its electronica / keyboards to the fore. Newman funking it up if you will.
Those after some classy AOR ‘Welcome To The Rush’ fits the bill, as does the semi ballad ‘Promise Me’ – marvel at the riffs, vocals and keys, plus an earworm of a chorus.
There’s soaring vocals on ‘Worth Dying For’ – Steve is helped by two singers om the harmonies, ‘To Go On Loving You’ adds an early ’90s bounce to the proceedings, then, and call me nuts, I hear some Peterik-like feel to ‘Moving Target’.
Steve Newman is one of the most consistent artists in the melodic rock world, always producing albums chock full of glorious melodies and memorable songs. This time around he has added a few musical twists, to help keep the Newman sound fresh.
‘Ignition’ is one of his best to date, pure melodic rock bliss – jump on in!
