WAITING FOR MONDAY – Waiting For Monday (2020)
Formed by vocalist Rudy Cardenas, an experienced musician from the indie LA Melodic Rock scene, and guitarist / singer August Zadra, WAITING FOR MONDAY are about to release their self titled debut via Frontiers Music. The band hails from Los Angeles and was brought to the attention of Frontiers by Jeff Scott Soto, with the label moving quickly to sign them based on their outstanding talents.
Musically, you can expect classic chart topping melodies ala Journey, Styx, and Foreigner, but with a decidedly modern approach.
Originally from Venezuela, Rudy Cardenas is an incredible vocal talent. His pipes carried him to the finals on Season 6 of American Idol and he has been heard on TV and movies ranging from Family Guy to Real Steel.
For five years, Rudy was the power alto for the multi-award winning vocal group, M-pact, who was named Vocal Group of the Year at the 2005 L.A. Music Awards. More recently, Rudy was the featured vocalist for the Gold-selling Hungarian hard rock album by Mr. Zsolt, and has released solo material as well.
August Zadra is best known for handling lead guitar and vocal duties in iconic singer Dennis DeYoung’s solo band for ten years now. Since the age of 15, guitar playing has been a passion that carried August from Fairbanks, Alaska to Hollywood, California, where he attended and graduated from the Guitar Institute of Technology.
He has been a regular feature in the Los Angeles music scene for the past 20 years, playing with a variety of bands, and is often sought out as a guitarist/vocalist collaborator for writing and recording projects.
Completing the lineup are Joe Travers (drums), Walter Ino (guitar and keyboards), and Eric Baines (bass).
There’s some albums, while overall good, become a bit tedious to listen to again while writing a review. “Waiting For Monday” is an exception. I can’t stop to listen to this album again and again.
With an eye put on the great Melodic Hard Rock bands of the past but with an updated sound, Waiting For Monday offer us twelve gems perfectly embedded into a jewel of an album.
‘Until the Dawn’ starts strong and put it clear that while extremely melodic, this band rocks with punch. It’s all very American circa 1989-1991, arranged and performed with gusto. I can see why Jeff Scott Soto recommended these guys to Frontiers.
‘End Of A Dream’ opens with a superb Spanish guitar part, and you can taste here as well that the album is finely produced with a clean bright sound. It’s a great song.
Then it’s time for the midtempo AORish song with ‘Shattered Lives’. There’s shades of Journey, Styx and Foreigner. And for the 4th track, we have the power ballad ‘Found You Now’: piano, smooth harmony vocals and a sweet synth arrangement.
Four songs and I am in love with ‘Waiting For Monday’. That’s why a push play again and again.
So I will stop here, go and listen to this delicious album yourself, including some of the best, fresh Melodic Hard / AOR songs you’ll hear this month, and the entire year for sure.
