DeVICIOUS – Reflections [Ltd Digipak +2] (2019)
“Reflections” is the second release from German-Serbian Melodic Hard Rockers DeVICIOUS, the be released March 1. This new CD is a slightly harder, rocking than the debut but still – or probably more than ever – melodies and groove rule.
Produced by bassist / songwriter Alex Frey, “Reflections” is a really good sounding record, with a strong punch in a classic Eighties style which is underlined by nice keyboards and solid choruses.
Opener “Long Way From Home“ is a perfect start with solid verses and fine guitar work, followed by the catchy “Never Let You Go” featuring Norwegian Åge Sten Nilsen (Ammunition, Wig Wam) on guest vocals.
On “Desire” appears the aforementioned ‘harder’ approach on this new album, where the star is Zoran Sandorov delivering a varied vocal register all over the song. Overall, the track brings to mind Ammunition, which is a good thing in my book.
“Hungarian Girl” is a melodic rock little gem, again with Mr. Sandorov providing a stupendous performance channeling Johnny Gioeli. Seriously, this guy can sing!
You can check Alex Frey’s talent for writing a strong melodic hard rocker in “Flying”. This is a complete song in this genre, with hooks, melodious guitars, and catchy choruses. A highlight.
“Saturday Night” is another enjoyable feel-good melodic hard rocker, which seems simple at first glance yet it’s fabulously executed.
And if you need an AOR dose, “We’re Dying” does the magic. Starting with lovely keys akin Survivor’s golden era, the song is a colorful display of ’80s melodies and some very heartfelt lyrics. One of the best 2019 songs so far.
“Run together” rocks with unexpected twists, “Feel the Heat” brings back the mid-paced melodic rock done with elegance, then “Manhattan Memories” will grab you with its midtempo AOrish feeling and smooth vocals.
DeVICIOUS have created here one of the strongest melodic hard rock / AOR records of 2019 so far, and for sure “Reflections” will be part of many Best Of lists this year.
It’s a really well balanced disc with tons of melodies, hooks, choruses and a punchy delivery via a bright production & mix.
